Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. Due to its high genetic variability, HIV can be divided into two major types, HIV type 1 and HIV type 2. HIV-1 is the most common and pathogenic strain of the virus. HIV-2 has not been widely recognized outside of Africa, has lower virulence and infectivity but still can cause AIDS.

Additionally, there is evidence that Zika fever in pregnant women can cause abnormal brain development in their fetuses by mother-to-child transmission, which may result in miscarriage or microcephaly. Transmission usually is through Aedes mosquitoes, but has been reported the transmission by infected blood or sexual contact.
