The Real Time PCR Detection Kit Andes Hantavirus comprises a series of specific targeted reagents designed for Andes hantavirus detection by using qPCR.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Andes hantavirus (also known as Orthohantavirus andesense) is an enveloped virus with a single-stranded negative-sense RNA genome belonging to the family Hantaviridae and the genus Orthohantavirus. It causes hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), a severe zoonotic disease primarily affecting humans with high mortality rates. The natural reservoirs are rodents of the subfamily Sigmodontinae, particularly Oligoryzomys longicaudatus. Human infection can lead to symptoms including fever, myalgia, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, respiratory distress, pulmonary oedema and cardiogenic shock. Transmission mainly occurs through the inhalation of aerosolised particles contaminated with rodent urine, faeces or saliva. However, Andes hantavirus is notable among hantaviruses for its documented person-to-person transmission. The virus is endemic in South America, particularly in Argentina and Chile, where sporadic cases and outbreaks have been reported.
Specificity was optimised based on all Andes hantavirus sequences available in public databases up to 8 May 2026, including the first genome of the virus isolated during the 2026 outbreak on a cruise ship.
