BactoReal® Kit Campylobacter spp. uses real-time PCR for the detection of the 16S rRNA gene of Campylobacter.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Campylobacter is a Gram-negative bacterium colonizing a broad range of animals. It usually lives in the digestive systems, including poultry, pigs and cattle. It is the most common bacterial food-borne pathogen worldwide causing light to severe diarrhoea. Transmission to humans occurs through contaminated food such as meat, unpasteurised milk, contaminated drinking water, or by contact with cats and dogs suffering from diarrhoea. However, poultry and specifically chicken meat is the main source for human Campylobacter infection. So far 25 species and 8 sub-species have been described. Among these, some show strict host specificity such as Campylobacter rectus for humans or C. mucosalis for pigs. Some species such as C. jejuni subsp. jejuni, C. coli and C. lari are linked to more than one host and have zoonotic potential in avian species.
