GENERAL INFORMATION:Trichophyton species are filamentous fungi of the family Arthrodermataceae. They cause various forms of dermatophytosis, including athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), toenail fungus (tinea unguium or onychomycosis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and ringworm (tinea corporis), favus (tinea capitis), kerion or ‘Malabar itch’. Transmission occurs by direct contact with infected individuals, by contact with infested particles (of dead skin, nails, hair) shed by the host, and by contact with the spores of the fungi, which are extremely difficult to eliminate. These fungi are found throughout the world, particularly in warm and humid environments. Some species are anthropophilic and primarily infect humans, while others are zoophilic.
