Disease usually starts with acute symptoms which are potentially fatal (not often) and a high transmission risk. The disease can become chronic if the animal survives the acute phase. Equine infectious anemia virus is endemic in the Americas, some parts of Europe, the Middle and Far East, Russia, and South Africa.
