Infectious bursal disease virus is a double-stranded RNA virus with a bi-segmented genome belonging to the genus {Avibirnavirus} in the family Birnaviridae. There are two distinct serotypes of the virus, but only serotype 1 viruses cause disease in poultry. The infectious bursal disease virus is responsible for Infectious bursal disease a highly contagious disease in young chickens. The disease can originate from clinical or subclinical infections, one of the most important effects is immunosuppression which causes high mortality rates generally at 3 to 6 weeks of age. It has economic relevance to the poultry industry worldwide due to increased susceptibility to other diseases and negative interference with effective vaccination.
