Background:Feline infectious peritonitis virus detection by using qPCR.
Feline infectious peritonitis virus is a positive-stranded RNA coronavirus that is infectious to cats worldwide. It is responsible for feline infectious peritonitis, an uncommon, but usually fatal, aberrant immune response. The virus replicates in the gut, but spreads systemically in the circulation and has the ability to replicate in monocytes and macrophages causing two main forms effusive (wet) and non-effusive (dry). The disease signs include chronic weight loss, anorexia, pyrexia, depression, fever, and vasculitis. Fluid in the abdomen, thorax, or pericardium is symptomatic of wet form. Granulomatous changes in the organs is symptomatic of dry form.
