GENERAL INFORMATION:Salmonella enterica is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae family. Found worldwide, Salmonella species infect both cold and warm-blooded animals. Transmission can occur via zoonosis, often from ingestion of contaminated food, water, or droplets. S. enterica has six subspecies with multiple serovars differing by antigenic specificity, defined by somatic (O) and flagellar (H) antigens. S. enterica subsp. enterica serovar Infantis, an emerging pathogen resistant to multiple antibiotics, has seen increased infections in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, mainly due to contaminated chicken and other foods.
