GENERAL INFORMATION:The Brachyspira genus comprises Gram-negative bacteria associated with diarrhoea and colitis in various animals, including birds and mammals, such as pigs and humans. Transmission typically occurs through the faecal-oral route. These bacteria are characterised by their flagellated, slow-growing, and often motile spirochete nature. Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, formerly known as Treponema hyodysenteriae and Serpulina hyodysenteriae, colonises the large intestine of pigs, causing swine dysentery. Notably, it can survive for weeks in moist pig faeces. Brachyspira pilosicoli, previously Serpulina pilosicoli, induces intestinal spirochaetosis in pigs and has been identified in other animals. Dogs are considered potential sources of infection for humans. Infection may result in oedema, haemorrhage, inflammatory cell infiltration, sloughing of cells into the intestinal lumen, malabsorption, and secretory diarrhoea in affected pigs. Brachyspira intermedia is found in the large intestines of various animal species. It is linked to diarrhoeic conditions in dogs, and some strains may cause swine dysentery and egg production issues in chickens. Migratory water birds serve as reservoirs for this microorganism, contributing to its potential spread. Brachyspira murdochii, considered a normal intestinal commensal in swine, is also associated with mild porcine colitis. Further research is necessary to comprehensively understand the implications of B. murdochii in different host species.
