While infection can occur via the fecal-oral route, ingestion of bacteria in raw or undercooked seafood, usual oysters, is the predominant cause of the acute gastroenteritis caused by V. parahaemolyticus. Wound infections also occur, but are less common than seafood-borne diseases.
