Background:Streptococcus spp. detection by using qPCR.
Streptococcus is a diverse genus of Gram-positive bacteria of the order Lactobacillales. Many streptococcal species are not pathogenic and form part of the commensal microbiota of the mouth, skin, intestine, and upper respiratory tract. However, some Streptococcus species infect a barrage of different animals, including humans, with diseases such as pink eye, meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, endocarditis, erysipelas and necrotizing fasciitis. Some of these relevant pathogenic species are S. agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae, S. bovis, S. suis, S. pneumoniae or S. gallolyticus.
