GENERAL INFORMATION:Bibersteinia is a genus composed by gram-negative and non-motile bacteria, and it belongs to the Pasteurellaceae family. The only known species is Bibersteinia trehalosi, a pathogen of sheep and other ruminants. It can cause systemic infections in sheep, pneumonia in ruminants, septicaemic pasteurellosis in feeder lambs and mastitis in sheep. Previously known as Pasteurella trehalose, it seems no direct contact is needed for transmission.
Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is a member of the Mycoplasma genus, characterized by the lack of a cell wall around their cell membrane. M. ovipneumoniae is a respiratory pathogen that affects sheep, goats and other caprine. It can cause primary atypical pneumonia and predispose infected animals to secondary pneumonia. Populations of M. ovipneumoniae infected sheep are often found to have varying strains of the bacterium with different virulence degrees coexisting within one animal. The bacterium can be found in the lungs, trachea, and nasal cavity of small ruminants. Transmission of M. ovipneumoniae is primarily through a respiratory route, regardless of whether there is direct contact or inhalation of an aerosol.
