GENERAL INFORMATION:
Monkeypox virus is a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. Monkeypox virus causes disease in various animals, including humans. Symptoms begin with fever, headache, muscle pains, swollen lymph nodes, and feeling tired. This is followed by a rash that forms blisters and crusts over. Transmission primarily occurs through contact with infected animals or their bodily fluids, while human-to-human transmission happens via skin-to-skin contact. Monkeypox is endemic in tropical rainforest regions of Central and West Africa but, since 2003, some outbreaks occur periodically in different countries around the world. There are two distinct clades of the virus: clade 1 (with subclades 1a and 1b) and clade 2 (with subclades 2a and 2b). In August 2024, outbreaks of clade 1b were detected beyond Africa, which is a strain with higher transmissibility and more severe clinical outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern twice, first on May 2022 and the second time on August 2024.
