GENERAL INFORMATION:
Measles morbillivirus is a single-stranded, negative-sense, enveloped, non-segmented RNA virus of the genus Morbillivirus within the family Paramyxoviridae. Humans are the only natural hosts of the virus; no animal or environmental reservoirs are known to exist. It causes measles, an acute viral respiratory illness characterized by a prodrome of fever and malaise, cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis. Infected individuals show a pathognomonic enanthema followed by a maculopapular rash that appears 14 days after a person is exposed to the virus. Patients are considered to be contagious from 4 days before to 4 days after the rash appears. The virus is transmitted from person to person via respiratory droplets produced when sick people cough and sneeze. Measles morbillivirus infection used to be endemic in Europe and most childs would become infected, but after immunisation against measles started, the epidemiology of the disease has dramatically changed. Measles is no longer endemic in most European countries but outbreaks resulting from imported index cases remain common in countries where subgroups of the population have low levels of immunity.
