GENERAL INFORMATION:Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that lack a cell wall around their cell membrane. There are no free-living Mycoplasma, they are strictly parasites. They parasitize, on the surface or intracellularly, a wide range of organism including humans, plants, animals, and insects. More than 100 species have been included in the genus Mycoplasma with a high degree of diversity. The assay MycpSpp-1 dtec-qPCR is specific for the no-mycoides cluster, marked in green in the phylogenetic tree included on the MycpSpp-1 Annex. M. ovipneumoniae is a respiratory pathogen of domestic sheep, domestic goats, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and other caprine that can both cause primary atypical pneumonia and predispose infected animals to secondary pneumonia with other agents. M. capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae is the etiologic agent of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, a severe and typically lethal respiratory disease. M. capricolum subsp. capricolum infection is usually non-fatal and instead results in chronic inflammation in a variety of organs, including joints, udder, eyes, and lungs. M. capricolum subsp. capricolum infection occurs worldwide and appears widespread but has rarely been found in species of small ruminants other than domestic goats and, occasionally, sheep.
