GENERAL INFORMATION:Avibacterium paragallinarum (previously known as Haemophilus paragallinarum) is a facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative bacterium of the Pasteurellaceae family, which is known to cause an infectious upper respiratory disease, infectious coryza. A. paragallinarum infects birds, causing symptoms such as facial edema, anorexia, and retarded growth. This bacterium has caused large economic losses in the chicken farm industry due to increased culling and a decrease in egg production. Transmission occurs by direct contact, airborne droplets, or through drinking contaminated water. A. paragallinarum has been detected in farms around the world but causes the greatest economic losses to the poultry industry of developing countries because of the presence of many variable pathogens or stress factors associated with poor environmental conditions for growth. Several serovars have been recognized.
