GENERAL INFORMATION:Clostridium perfringens (formerly known as C. welchii, or Bacillus welchii) is a spore-forming Gram-positive bacterium that is found in many environmental sources as well as in the intestines of humans and animals. C. perfringens is responsible of food poisoning, gastrointestinal disease, gas gangrene and related necrotic conditions in humans and other mammals. This bacterium produces 4 major toxins (named Alpha, Beta, Epsilon and Iota). Beta toxin is produced in type B and type C strains. This toxin is a necrotizing agent by increasing blood pressure mediated by release of catecholamine. Beta toxin, in type B strains of C. perfringens, usually manifest as enterotoxaemia in infantile mammals; particularly piglets, calves, foal, and lambs.
