GENERAL INFORMATION:Acinetobacter baumannii was usually treated with carbapenems, but resistant organisms have emerged. There are three main mechanisms that A. baumannii uses to resist carbapenems: production of enzymes capable of hydrolyzing carbapenems (carbapenemases), altered function of membrane-associated proteins such as porins, and activation of drug efflux pumps. The most frequent mechanism is the production of carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D β-lactamases, being blaOXA-58 dominant in specific regions such as Bolivia and Chile. A displacement of blaOXA-58 by blaOXA-23 has been observed in some locations, like Los Angeles.
