Detection of RNA of the gag polyprotein of Maedi-Visna Virus (MVV)

Background: The Maedi-Visna virus (MVV) also called ovine lentivirus (OvLV) is a single-stranded RNA small ruminant lentivirus (SRLV) within the retrovirus family. There are neurovirulent and non-neurovirulent strains of MVV. The MVV is closely related to the caprine arthritis - encephalitis (CAE) virus. Both infect cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage and cause lifelong infections. Visna (“wasting”, in Icelandic) is a slow progressive encephalomyelitis of sheep. Although most infections are subclinical, a minority of animals develops progressive, untreatable disease syndromes including dyspnea (maedi), slowly progressive arthritis, mastitis or neurologic signs (visna) such as encephalitis.

Description: ViroReal® Kit Maedi-Visna virus uses one-step reverse transcription RT real-time PCR for the detection of the gag polyprotein gene of Maedi-Visna virus (MVV). Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the pathogen as well as a positive control and an internal positive control (IPC). Reverse transcription and PCR can be performed in one reaction well.
