Background:Respiratory bacterial pathogens of small ruminants Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Bibersteinia trehalosi and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae detection by using qPCR.
Sheeps and goats are highly susceptible to respiratory diseases, which account for almost 50% of mortality amongst them. Pneumonia comprises the main disease of the lower respiratory tract and usually are of infectious origin.
Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Bibersteinia trehalosi and Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae are important bacterial pathogens associated with pneumonia in small ruminants. M. haemolytica and P. multocida can be cultured from the upper respiratory tract of healthy sheep and goats. However, different factors such as the introduction of new animals, high-density stocking, poor ventilation, and nutrition changes can predispose to acute respiratory diseases by altering the protective mechanisms in the respiratory tract. Under stress conditions, these bacteria may invade lung tissue and cause disease. Also, M. ovipneumoniae alone can cause mild bronchopneumonia; however, it is often isolated along with M. haemolytica from sheep and goats with severe pneumonia, suggesting that the Mycoplasma may predispose the lung to invasion by this organism. B. trehalosi (formerly Pasteurella trehalosi) is an important pathogen of sheep being primarily associated with serious systemic infections in lambs, but also has an association with pneumonia in sheep.
Respiratory diseases have negative consequences associated with economic losses related to casualties, a decrease in average daily gain in lambs and goats, a reduction in feed efficiency and slaughterhouse confiscations, as well as considerable expenses in veterinarian treatments.
