    Foot-and-mouth disease or hoof-and-mouth disease (Aphthae epizooticae) is an infectious and sometimes fatal viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic and wild animals. FMD is highly infectious and can be spread by infected animals through aerosols, through contact with contaminated farming equipment, vehicles, clothing or feed, and by domestic and wild predators. FMD is caused by a picornavirus, non-enveloped, positive-stranded RNA viruses with an icosahedral capsid and genetically highly variable, which limits the effectiveness of vaccination. Of the seven described serotypes of this virus, A, C, O, Asia 1, and SAT3 appear to be distinct lineages; SAT 1 and SAT 2 are unresolved clades. Type SAT-3 has the most restricted distribution mainly located in Zimbabwe.
