BACKGROUND: Cronobacter spp. was originally described as the yellow-pigmented Enterobacter cloacae until it was defined as Enterobacter sakazakii in 1980. Then in 2008, it was reclassified as a new genus – Cronobacter. This microorganism is considered to be an emerging opportunistic foodborne pathogen, linked to clinical cases of infection in either infants or adults. Clinical symptoms include necrotizing enterocolitis, bacteremia, and meningitis with high fatality rates in neonates and infants. The sources of contamination, ecology, and virulence characteristics of this organism remain poorly understood. However, it has been isolated from a wide variety of foods including infant formula, milk powders, cheese, vegetables, and meat. Milk powder and powder infant formula have been suggested to be the vehicles responsible for 50–80% of Cronobacter infections. Recently, rapid and sensitive alternative methods have been found to be attractive alternatives to the conventional culture method for Cronobacter spp. detection. These methods are PCR based methods, in particular, real time PCR based, that allow the rapid detection of Cronobacter spp. in food samples. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: REAL TIME DETECTION KIT Cronobacter spp. uses real-time PCR for the detection of Cronobacter spp. in a simple, reliable, and rapid procedure. The assay is based on 5’ nuclease real time PCR reactions to amplify a unique genomic sequence in the target microorganism. Our carefully designed primers and probe ensure highest sensitivity and specificity. The kit consists of an assay mix for the detection of the target microrganism as well as a positive control and an internal control (IC).
