Vibrio cholerae is a waterborne and food born pathogen that causes gastrointestinal disorders. On the other hand, Vibrio parahaemolyticus is found worldwide in estuarine waters and is a leading cause of gastroenteritis Typically, human infections with these organisms result from the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. In the case of V. cholerae infections by contaminated water ingestion are also relevant. The need for rapid, accurate and sensitive methods for the detection of these species of Vibrio is a major food safety issue. Since conventional microbiological methods for their detection and identification are time-consuming, PCR base detection of these Vibrio species unique DNA sequences, due to its rapidity and accuracy, in particular using real time PCR and specific fluorescent probes.
