Escherichia coli, which is part of the microbiota of the intestine, can cause enteric/diarrhoegenic or extra-intestinal infections in humans. Enteric E. coli that cause disease can present dierent virulence determinants, corresponding to dierent pathotypes. These include the verocytotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC), comprising the enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and the enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). These E. coli strains, specially EHEC (including the O157:H7 and O157:H- serotypes), are recognized as major pathogens of foodborne disease in humans. They are mostly transmitted through undercooked minced beef, inadequately pasteurized milk, cold sandwiches, sprouts and vegetables. The need for rapid, accurate and sensitive methods for the detection of these E. coli strains is a major food safety issue. Since conventional microbiological methods for their detection and identification are time-consuming, PCR has been introduced to the food industry as a highly sensitive and specific detection method.

  • This test allows the detection of E. coli in food products after enrichment in buffered peptone water and DNA extraction. It can also be used with animal feedstuff and environmental samples. 

    Pre-enrichment broth and temperature according to ISO 16654:2001. The kit is suitable for use in real time instruments with FAM and ROX detection channels.
